Coffee Chats: Sign Language Interpreters Face a Changed Landscape Together

September 8, 2021

It’s a transformative time for interpreters!  How do we interpret in a world with a prolonged pandemic? Join us for a weekly coffee chat to connect with others working in the industry who understand.  To Register, click here.

Video Transcript:

The interpreting world literally transformed overnight.

Because you know, pandemic.

The days of working in the field are no longer. Now we’re faced with the prospect of staying home, glued to our chairs, working in front of screens all day long. Zoom, VRI, and whatnot. VRS interpreters are increasingly working from home. Approximately 50% of VRS interpreters now work from home.

And as interpreters go back into the world, they are supposed to wear masks and PPE. How do they begin to interact with Deaf people? Interpreting students, fresh out of their programs, are searching for chances to increase their skills. But there are less opportunities for them to interact with the community. What can they do?

Those are some of the questions that we at Street Leverage are very eager to discuss and how these changes will impact our shared futures. So we’re hosting weekly coffee chats each Saturday on Zoom.

We’d love to see you there. There is a cap on attendees. Please go ahead and register for your slot.

Join us on the street! We’ll learn from each other. Hope to see you there!
