Description

Engaging deaf individuals rooted in the community to serve as language models and mentors to k-12 interpreters working in school districts located in rural/isolated districts was the focus of a pilot program to establish a pool of deaf language mentors and cultural liaisons across underserved rural areas in our state. An overview of the program, recruitment activities and pay-it-forward stipends, training of first time mentors and perspectives of the mentor-in-training and lead mentor will be shared along with the challenges presented in this environment.
